Physical Management
PASTURE & MINERALS
Berry's Naturally beef is raised on 100% grasses and legumes, from start to finish, whether it be grazing in the pasture during the months when the plants are abundantly growing directly in the field, or from high nutrient hay we provide during the winter months. The pastures contain red and white clovers, alfalfa, and various grasses for the cattle to thrive on. The cattle have continuous access, and can freely choose from three natural minerals; kelp-dried seaweed, sea salt, or a mineral blended mix of all the micro elemental minerals and vitamins they need. We do not use any growth hormones or antibiotics. Fortunately, with our total management wellness program, we haven’t had a need to use antibiotics for any sickness or injury to date.
PASTURE ROTATION
Typically the cattle are moved to fresh green pasture every one to two days through a process called rotational grazing. The actual moving day is determined by a number of factors; how well the pasture is growing, the number of cattle in the herd, and the desired post-grazing forage mass.
The cattle trust and respect us, and therefore look forward to seeing us in their pasture. All cattle eyes are on us walking across the field and those that are laying down lazily get to their feet, relieve themselves (a good means of fertilizing the pasture), gather as a group, and mosey over to the fence, where they know the new pasture has been set and is ready for them to move in to.

THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT ROTATIONAL GRAZING
- A “fence” is simply a single strand of electrically charged tape secured to the ground on removable stakes. This fence is rotated manually when the cattle move to new pasture.
- What was the back fence is wound up onto a spool and moved forward one pasture ahead of the cattle so it is continuously leap frogging ahead of the cattle.
- As a result, the cattle gather at the fence when they see us in the pasture and know that the fence will come down, allowing them access to fresh new grazing.
- A single “here cow” voice command called out to them, a reeling in of the fence strand, and the move to new pasture is accomplished.
- When the cattle move to the new pasture, and are happily nipping off clover heads and fresh grasses, we proceed with the “rotation” of the fence to the new pasture. The continual fresh water fill system and mineral feeder is moved as well. This process takes 15-20 minutes a day.

- Grass fed beef contains more omega-3s (the "good" fat)
- Meat from grass fed animals has two to four times more omega-3 fatty acids than grain fed animals.
- Those who consume more omega-3s are less likely to have high blood pressure, or an irregular heartbeat.
- Those who consume more omega-3s are 50% less likely to have a heart attack.

DIET
Up until the mid 40’s, beef cattle were raised primarily on pasture and forages. Starting with the agricultural revolution after the post World War II when synthetic chemicals and fertilizers were abundant, cattle began to be managed with a significant portion of grain in their diet, and were confined to feed lots. There have been numerous studies showing the correlation between pasture raised animals and the implementation of grain in their diet and the downturn in the general health of the American people. Hence, since we have chosen to raise our cattle on their naturally inherit diet choice of grasses and legumes, we are maintaining all of the natural health benefits that they are born with. As a result, the healthy omega-3s are retained and the all forage diet does not multiply the unhealthy omega-6s. With their four stomach digestive system, they were created to efficiently convert grasses into proteins. We believe by providing our cattle the natural grasses, and some added nutrition, we are producing a very healthy meat. Our added nutrition consists of adding organic certified apple cider vinegar, or hydrogen peroxide, to their water. Just as in humans, this helps to boost their immune system and adds probiotics to their digestive tract. The organic certified minerals we provide (mentioned above) also enhances their general vigor, keeping them happy and healthy.

LIVING CONDITIONS
365 days a year, the cattle are thoroughly enjoying and relishing in the great outdoors! In the winter months of snow and cold weather they have access to the barn with a straw bedded pen where they can lay down if they so choose. Truth be told, they are happiest outside and there are many days we see them outside romping and playing in the snow, like happy kids, with no regard for the cold or blowing snow. They LOVE it outside! By not penning them strictly inside, this prevents respiratory problems caused by dampness of enclosed barns. The same holds true for the summer months and the extreme condition of heat and sun. They have access to shade from woodlands and have plenty of water. Again, like children, they prefer to romp and play, and when they are hot or tired they simply snuggle down in the shade and take a nap. Our cattle are raised on country sunshine and we say life doesn’t get any better than that!
